The Lawrence City Commission voted unanimously early Wednesday morning, after more than four hours of public comment and general discussion, to adopt on first reading the Lawrence Community Shelter's application for a special use permit for the Franklin Park Circle site. All five commissioners agreed that the legalities and intricacies of the ordinance would need to be covered at next Tuesday's meeting.

The Lawrence Community Shelter, in agreement with City staff, has deferred its application for a special use permit (SUP) to next Tuesday, April 20th.

LCS was set to vie for the proposed Franklin Circle site, located near the Douglas County Jail, this Tuesday. A letter from an attorney representing businesses in the area has caused LCS to opt for more time. The letter stated that LCS' relocation in the area, which is an industrial, business district, would violate private development covenants and that neighboring businesses would take legal action to enforce the covenants.

Both the City and LCS decided the legalities of the SUP and convenant issue would bog down Tuesday's meeting and that further review was necessary before addressing the matter at a City Commission meeting.

Because she lives near 12th street and Ohio, Tonia Salas stays on the lookout for strangers while she walks home from work in the late evenings. Although she works only a few blocks from her home, Salas doesn’t feel safe in the Oread neighborhood.

“I make sure to drive when I have to work at night. Even though I’m only a block and a half away from my work, I just know that I’m not going to want to walk back late at night,” said Salas, Alameda, Calif., junior.

The city of Lawrence, in conjunction with the University of Kansas and the Oread Neighborhood Association, has developed the Oread Neighborhood KU Pedestrian Lighting Project in which lights will be installed along specified pathways leading from campus through the Oread neighborhood to Massachusetts Street downtown.

'Poetry Slurr' blends styles

First Wednesdays at the Jazzhaus are reserved for poetry. But Sara Glass, the host of these evenings, is reluctant to bill them as poetry nights.

"You say the word 'poetry' and that puts such a bad taste in people's mouth," Glass says chuckling. "I think people expect iambic pentameter or some guy reading from a sonnet book," she adds, as if it's still unclear, this is not what they do here.

This poetry is meant to leap from the stage. And bad taste or not, more than 60 people came out to support this month's "Poetry Slurr" and at least 25 attendees read.

Partners in Health has been working on the ground in Haiti for over 20 years.  They urgently need our support to help those affected by the recent earthquake.  These are the words emblazzened on the #HelpHaiti@Lawrence poster forwarded to larryville.com by Joshua Anderson.  On Sunday, January 31, 2010 at Liberty Hall in downtown Lawrence, the Yuca Roots and The Dactyls will be performing along with Rachel Anderson and DJ Candlepants.  Food is provided with the ticket and the benefit provides a silent auction with donations from local businesses.
