You’d think that escaping Los Angeles for a move to Lawrence would have given me a culture shock beyond compare, but the culture shock I experienced yesterday at two sites right here in the city makes the LA-Lawrence distinction seem pale. It’s morning at an organic chestnut orchard at the north edge of Lawrence, where the owners worry that an airport expansion plan for a new industrial park might roll through like a steamroller, squashing them out of business. |

Chancellor Hemenway,
We, students at the University of Kansas, appreciate the university’s
efforts to promote an environment that respects the differences of all
people and that cultivates the sharing of progressive knowledge. Beyond
mere academics, an institution of higher learning should also be a
democratic space where students demand the opportunity to have an
impact on administrative decisions that affect themselves and the
world. To this end, we wish to inform you about a few of our concerns
regarding KU’s associations with the Department of Defense, Department
of Homeland Security and the United States Armed Forces, and how these
connections relate to the now six-year-long war in Iraq.
