Dispensing with the journalistic portion of the column first, this week’s venue of choice was The Jazzhaus, located @ 926 1/2 Massachusetts St. That's correct, it is an upstairs club. The Kahuna that helped me out at this venue was Brett Pitner. Brett is the Night GM and he claims Long Beach, CA as his hometown, prefers Crown & Coke, listens to Rock & Roll, and if he's not spending time at The Jazzhaus, he would be spending it at The Red Lyon. I have yet to visit a venue in Lawrence that gave me such an immediate sense of de ja vu all over again as the Jazzhaus. The upstairs climb, the narrow passage to the club, the neatly arranged small circular tables, the variety of "torsos" hanging on the walls around the club, and the clientele encountered while there, all shouted "The Wharf" in my subconscious. |

Partners in Health has been working on the ground in Haiti for over 20 years. They urgently need our support to help those affected by the recent earthquake. These are the words emblazzened on the #HelpHaiti@Lawrence poster forwarded to larryville.com by Joshua Anderson. On Sunday, January 31, 2010 at Liberty Hall in downtown Lawrence, the Yuca Roots and The Dactyls will be performing along with Rachel Anderson and DJ Candlepants. Food is provided with the ticket and the benefit provides a silent auction with donations from local businesses.

My journey starts with a fun place at 704 Massachusetts in downtown Lawrence called Rudy’s Pizzeria. What a great place to start! |

Today is a day that we celebrate and remember Martin Luther King, Jr. As I sit here and contemplate what he meant to our country, I also wonder what he would think about today's world, seen through his vision of the past. Would he have believed that his March on Washington in 1963 would lead to an African American man becoming President of the United States in less then 50 years? |
