HolidayWelcome to the holidays!

Wireless Broadband Going Rural?
Written by Larryville Staff
Thursday, 17 December 2009 13:21

Lawrence, Kansas - The government awarded the State of Kansas $2 million to map the need for internet access in rural areas last November. Many rural areas only have dial-up service to choose from when signing up for internet access.

Lawrence Freenet, a local company, is looking to change all that. The company has also applied for an additional $4 million grant available through the Government Stimulus Package of 2009.  It plans to expand wireless internet coverage to include a larger portion of the rural market.

If Lawrence Freenet is awarded the grant money, it would be a great benefit to the Lawrence economy.  The money would be used to fund improvements on the local, wireless internet architecture, provide rural Kansans broadband access, and provide additional jobs working in the Lawrence community.

KUJH-TV News provided a great newscast on YouTube that provides some education on this issue.
