On  December 3rd, 2009 at 5:25 P.M. EST, President Obama was called upon the light the National Christmas Tree.  Here is a condensed version of his words:

Tonight, we celebrate a story that is as beautiful as it is simple.  The story of a child born far from home to parents guided only by faith, but who would ultimately spread a message that has endured for more the 2,000 years - that no matter who we are or where we are from, we are each called to love one another as brother and sister.

While this story may be a Christian one, its lesson is universal.  It speaks to the hope we share as a people.  And it represents a tradition that we celebrate as a country –- a tradition that has come to represent more than any one holiday or religion, but a season of brotherhood and generosity to our fellow citizens.

Congressman Tiarhrt Responds to Obama's Afghanistan Plan PDF Print E-mail

Congressman Todd Tiahrt issued the following statement in response to President Obama's speech:

“The president reached the right conclusion that a broad counterinsurgency strategy is needed to defeat the Taliban and al-Qaeda; however, I am profoundly disappointed in the president’s sluggish approach to this overdue decision. Since the success of the troop surge in Iraq and General McChrystal’s August recommendation of a similar approach in Afghanistan, the way forward has been clear for months. The inexcusable decision-making delays during the past eight months has demonstrated to our troops and the world that President Obama would rather bow to foreign leaders than make tough choices necessary to achieve success in Afghanistan.

“It is imperative we stay in Afghanistan and support our troops with the resources they need until the job is done and the Taliban and al-Qaeda are no longer a threat to the Afghan people, Americans, and our allies— not based on an artificial exit timetable created in the Oval Office.

“Our military servicemen and women around the world deserve true leadership from the president and all the resources necessary to succeed in their mission without delay. As a Member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, I will continue to work with my colleagues to ensure that our troops have the funding and all the tools necessary to effectively counter the insurgency and achieve success in Afghanistan.”
