On August 5th, the Lawrence City Commission will accept, deny, defer or refer back to Planning Commission a rezoning request from Agriculture to IG (General Industrial District), on a 155 acre land parcel on the north side of Farmers Turnpike (County Rd 438) near the Lawrence/Lecompton I-70 Interchange.

Under city zoning, IG district zone offers the heaviest possible industrial uses including, for example, FMC, Farmland, West Star Energy and dynamite and slaughter plants. By description in the Lawrence Development Code, IG zoning is generally incompatible with residential and low intensity commercial areas.

Dwayne Schwada et al, owns and plans to develop the 155 acre parcel outside of the Lawrence Urban Growth Area (UGA). Because the land is not within the UGA, the land becomes an ‘island annexation’. The completion of the annexation comes with the potential granting of the IG zoning by the City Commission.

Lawrence, Kansas is not exempt from the growing number of homeless families with children. Valerie Miller-Coleman, a Homeless Outreach Specialist for the City of Lawrence, estimates that she and fellow caseworkers serve over one-hundred homeless families with children annually. It is a problem that continues to grow.

In an effort to better serve homeless families with children, a network is being established in the city of Lawrence. This network is part of a national organization which began as the Interfaith Hospitality Network, and in recent years was renamed Family Promise. Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) or Family Promise was established twenty years ago to help homeless families within communities achieve lasting independence.
