are you well? My name is Mike Ford. My people are Six Towns Choctaw.
Chahta Holisso means Choctaw writing.
I inquired about writing in
the Lawrencian and this is the outcome. Some of you may know me from
the numerous letters to the editor that I’ve authored in the Lawrence
Journal-World, Topeka Capitol-Journal, and Kansas City Star. Usually, I
write short, yet historically detailed letters rebutting misinformed
views about historical or legal issues pertaining to the Native peoples
in this vicinity.

A guest editorial
Arvid Schulenberger, the
late, great KU professor of English of my undergraduate years, used to
commiserate with those of us afflicted with a “pathological weakness
for words.” Forty-plus years later, still unapologetically afflicted,
having toted more boxes of books than flats of furniture from one home
to another across the country and back, I find myself questioning the
need for a $30 million monument to the printed word presently being
touted by many of my fellow bibliophiles. There aren’t many public-good
projects that an old unreconstructed liberal can’t embrace. But this
one, as presently constituted, is so myopic in its conception and
profligate in its use of public resources that it is the exception.

PBS's Reading Rainbow has won 9 national Emmy Awards for
Outstanding Childrens Series over the years, the last one being as recent as
2005.
