LAWRENCE - By all accounts, Lawrence, Kansas is a safe community. Located half way between Topeka and Kansas City, Lawrence has a much lower incidence of murder and robbery than its neighbors.
Though the overall safety of the community is relatively high, east side neighbors have recently been plagued with both violent crime and property crime. A double homicide at 13th and Delaware in June left neighbors rattled as did a drive by shooting the same night. When a resident’s home was invaded at 12th and New York on Friday, neighbors took action.

On Saturday about 40 neighbors got together at the East Side People’s Market to discuss the recent uptick in violent crimes. Neighbors came up with a number of ideas to make the neighborhood safer.
During the meeting neighbors agreed to start a phone list letting them call each other when something suspicious is happening on the block. Neighbors will also begin to canvas the area to offer outdoor lights to anyone who wants them. The neighborhood also discussed implementing an official neighborhood watch program.
