What does feeling "spiritual" mean? Does it involve prayer? How does one become spiritual? When does one feel most connected to a spirit; most like a spiritual being? Finally, where does embracing the human being and the spiritual being meet?

While thousands of self-help manuals, talk show hosts and professional psychologists are available to give their version of answers to the above questions, for some, for many, the readily available quick fix to the infinite question of spirituality is, in a word: music. From Techno to Gospel, to the drum circles at Lawrence’s own Wakarusa Festival, music certainly brings people together on a level of elevatation. With Tibetan thought amoung the ancient philosophies of life, The Tibetan Art of Living deems music as "perhaps the most powerful and universal form of art". Sound is "what fills the broad spectrum of life and finds expression in human thought, which then leads to creative endeavor."

Whew!  What an incredible year in music it was. Let me count the ways. In 2007 there were some notable reissues of classic records, Hip Hop died and was reborn, old dogs learned new tricks (and went on tour!), Canada, Sweden, and Brazil gave indie-rock a much needed makeover, quiet was the new loud, and genres all but completely disintegrated. Tegan and Sara are identical twin sisters from Canada playing an angular indie pop-rock concoction which relies heavily on unique rhythms and instrumental arrangements as well as a knack for vocal/lyrical interplay that is both poignantly emotional and refreshingly nonchalant; a sugary guilty pleasure without the hangover.
