Voters had the choice to keep taxes lower in Lawrence or create a scenario making Lawrence the highest-taxed city, per capita, in Kansas. Raising taxes to support the under-performing “T”ransit system in Lawrence was fiscally irresponsible and an action of feel-good emotion with a 10-year consequence. The adage goes that if one gives a man enough rope, he will hang himself. With a resounding “Bring the Noose,” the voters chose to hang themselves with higher taxes.

As I write this the gentleman from Illinois, via Kansas, Barack Obama, has made history by becoming the first African-American to be elected president of the United States of America.

And the word that has been ricocheting through my mind is the word “manipulation.” I’ve been meditating on it for weeks and how everyone, no matter how good or bad, will, at some point in their life use intellectual and emotional manipulation to obtain something they desire from someone else.

In Lawrence, as in most towns, everyone exclaims over the ineptitude of the principal local paper. In our blue town the complaints usually focus on the daily’s editorials, and especially on the Saturday column, written by the paper’s aging godfather. The daily unsigned editorials used to be routinely offensive, but a changing of the guard among the anonymous scribes has made them much less disgusting than they used to be, even though they continue to champion the Chambercrat agenda.

Not as much whining and complaining this month as usual–just a call to action. We have a critical issue on the upcoming election ballot that needs support from all of us.

The Lawrence bus system is in dire peril. Although we voted it in once (through a city commission election in which it was the pivotal issue), our current rulers have decided to junk it if we don’t vote to tax bread and milk to support it.
